Bare trees

There are a million variations of this shot. Every kid with a camera snaps something like this among his first images, but there’s something about those last few moments of sunlight in the woods that make these pictures irresistible.

Perhaps the best I’ve ever seen of an image like this was in the closing scenes of American Beauty. In the final moments of his life, Lester Burnham describes watching the leaves falling at Boy Scout camp.
