In praise of November

If I could paint, this is the type of image I would paint. I particularly appreciate the limited palette of a foggy November morning. With the cacophony of October color past, November affords us the opportunity to concentrate on composition and form.

The penultimate month gets a bad rap as dead and ugly. It’s neither. It’s a time of preparation, readying the bed for the long winter’s nap. Nature is telling us to slow down, and be more reflective. Wal-Mart disagrees. Perhaps our issue isn’t with November, but with corporate America’s attempt to defy it.

Life’s a birch

These trees were heavily stressed during the freak snowstorm last month. I’ve been waiting for a still enough day to photograph them, and finally got one today. The light wasn’t perfect, so I shot three exposures for HDR. After processing with Photomatix, I made a few additional tweaks to boost the contrast and add some vignetting.

This photo is dedicated to the memory of Vito Cappelletti, Jr. 1962 – 2011 who lost his battle with ALS last week. I’m a better person for having known him, and the world’s a better place for having had him.

Bare trees

There are a million variations of this shot. Every kid with a camera snaps something like this among his first images, but there’s something about those last few moments of sunlight in the woods that make these pictures irresistible.

Perhaps the best I’ve ever seen of an image like this was in the closing scenes of American Beauty. In the final moments of his life, Lester Burnham describes watching the leaves falling at Boy Scout camp.

E-Z Rider

My nephew and I took a Thanksgiving ATV ride in the woods behind his house.

Beach pines in black and white

These pine branches were just off the beach near Freeport in the Bahamas. The light was really harsh, and even though the glare in the water is a little clipped towards the center, I still like it. It’s probably not a shot I’m going to print and hang on the wall, but it’s interesting enough to keep around.

Like other creative efforts, the artist doesn’t really know if he connects with it because it stands on its own, or if it’s because it’s come so far from what it was.
